The "OLD" Atrium

Postby r.m.anderson » 25 Dec 2008, 06:45

Over the past few hours have tried to view the old site and my internet explorer returns a reply
server not found etc.

So does this mean the OLD site is history?

Has Kristine (Kez) finally pulled the plug?

In any event it is time to start using this NEW site exclusively and have Kez merge the
data from the old site into the new.

Kristine thank you very much for keeping the Atrium alive in difficult times til a new caretaker/
owner (Kez) could continue to entertain us.

And again thanks to Kez for accepting the challenge to operate this forum.

Seasons Greetings and all that stuff!

It would be simple enough to merge the post data from the old WebBBS into this phpBB (I've done an experiment already to confirm this). The real problem is going to be with users' data.

Unless WebBBS used exactly the same password scrambling algorithm that phpBB does (and it almost certainly doesn't) then there's no way to import users' passwords ..... barring a long process of trial and error. (Passwords are stored in a scrambled form. There's no way to unscramble them, but you never actually need to do that. At login, you just scramble the supplied password the same way as you did when the user registered; and if it doesn't match the one in the database, then it's wrong. That way, even if some ne'er-do-well gets the users' names and scrambled passwords, they can't do anything with them. The only downside is that if you ever forget your old password, nobody can recover it for you, so you have to have a new one.)

Meanwhile, if anyone has any "old" users' e-mail addresses lying around in their cache folder or anything similar (I know I haven't -- I set mine so it gets purged automatically on startup), it'd be great if they could let them know we're here now.

Kez:

The response I keep receiving when checking the OLD site is:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

Have you (or Kristine) in fact pulled the plug or dismantled the site?

It would have been nice to have left a forwarding link to this NEW site for a while.
Kristine did that in "RED" print for the last few days the site was up and running;
but should have been til the end of the month unless however funding or the lease
on the old site was up for renewal - cost and maintenance considerations.

Would like to retain as many members from the old site as possible and if possible
send each of the registered members (think it was just under 50) or those with an
email on file an invite to come over and join us in the new venture.
Also with your permission would like to post in other forums; protocol not withstanding
that the NEW Atrium is open for discussion and participation. Thinking specifically of
Bravehearts and the SkirtCafe and ziggys Defiant-Angel - - - others ? ? ?

Happy New Year!

I haven't done anything, honest!

According to `whois`, the grevstad.org domain is not due to expire until 2013. However, I always got the impression that the Atrium was hosted on the far end of an ADSL connection -- I don't think many hosting companies use Mandriva :) although that's not to say there's anything wrong with it. A static IP address (which you really need to run a server) is more expensive than a dynamic address. (There is always the venerable dyndns.org service which attempts to track your assigned IP address, and the better-quality routers support that directly, but it's still a bit Barbie-my-first.) And, of course, the hardware on which it was running may have become unreliable.

Without hearing from Kristine, I can't comment further.

Agreed. If anyone has contact information, please use it!

Definitely -- the more the merrier! Just please don't go breaking any other forums' rules to plug this one -- we don't want to start out by getting a bad reputation :D

As I remember, a few years ago Kris said he needed a new server. Due to the cost I very much doubt he ever got one. For that reason the server could have failed.

If the server is unreliable and too costly to maintain, it explain one of the reasons that he has been looking to find a new host for the Atrium.

Nothing wrong with the server and nothing wrong with me. Just a problem with my network connection. We lost our connection on mid-day 12/24 and didn't get it restored until mid-day 12/30. I am located in the Seattle, WA area and we had some snow, wind and ice problems over the holidays.

I will continue to leave my server running for the indefinite future, helping Kez acquire all the messages, including those archived going all the way back to the very beginning of the Atrium.

Glad to hear nothings wrong. With 4700 miles between us it is difficult to know what conditions are like so far away. We heard about the bad weather in the US, but reports have been about the snow from North Carolina to Massachusetts, via New York City.

Hello,

Excuse for asking, but did hippy_kez ever successfully migrated the Old Atrium to the "all new Atrium"?

I don't see the Old Atrium here. :?
